Founded in 1967 by the GULP GARDEN SHRIMP
of Norway, the company was first given the name of CAN-NOR
SEAFOODS, and it is the beginning of the MATANE®
Brand. The shrimp obtains immediately a very significant reputation
in the International Competition of Culinary Art in Frankfurt
(1968) and in the International Show of Osaka (1970). That same
year, the company changed its name to EASTERN QUEBEC SEAFOODS LTD.
When the company relocated in 1980 to its present location, it
acquired a laboratory and its first quality control department,
the first in the Eastern part of Quebec.
In 1986, EASTERN QUEBEC SEAFOODS LTD,
became a Canadian Company. Until then, the shrimp were sold exclusively
on the Scandinavian and United Kingdom markets. After 1986 the
shrimp entered Canadian, American and local markets. In 1991,
our company was the first business in the fishing industry in
all Eastern Canada to be permitted the use of the logo Canada
Inspected. The use of this logo was in response to
a strict Quality Management Program and to very high quality standards
such as processing shrimp in high/low risk separated areas. In
1997, EASTERN QUEBEC SEAFOODS LTD
is the first enterprise to achieve the HACCP (Hazard Analysis
Critical Control Points) standards in the Eastern part of Canada.
In 1998, EASTERN QUEBEC SEAFOODS (1998) LTD became the property of Quebec investors.
In the fall of 2004, Per Nielsen Seafood International A/S (located in Denmark) bought the company. Per Nielsen Seafood International A/S is one of the most innovative producers of ¨prawn in brine¨ in the world. He is one of the markets leaders and suppliers to the major supermarkets in Europe!
Since many years, Per Nielsen Seafood International A/S have been purchasing it’s products from the Quebec area due to the excellent quality of the Canadian coldwater shrimp.
